The Story So Far 1967-2008

1967 Closure of the Cambridge to Sudbury British Rail lineold train

1995 Formation of the 'Cambridge-Sudbury Rail Renewal Association'.

1996-7 Association Members survey former rail-track and seek views of the public. Raised funds & received grants from Sudbury & Haverhill Town Councils fora Pre-feasibility Study.

1998 Pre-feasibility Study commissioned. Carried out by Handley Partnership.

1999
Study published, showing feasibility of renewal in engineering terms of a single-track railway with passing loops.

2000
Association reported on Study in meeting with local authorities, who commended Study, but called for a full Feasibility Study.

Collecting Signatures2000-02 Association conducts Petition in Cambridge, Haverhill, Clare, Long Melford & Sudbury, gaining 11,400 signatures: presented to Minister for Transport & to Cambridgeshire, Suffolk & Essex County Councils. Made appeals to national local authorities for funding ‑ with mixed success.

2003 The Association resolved to form The Cambridge to Colchester Railway Development Company Limited. Gained grants from St. Edmundsbury B.C. & Suffolk C.C. towards Stage I (Market Research) of full Feasibility Study, and commissioned Wilson, Lee & Partners to carry out Research into Cambridge to Haverhill section of the rail-route. Report of this research showed over 72% of respondents woulnew traind travel on the restored Railway. (6,000 or more Haverhill-Cambridge single journeys per week.)

MAIN public verdict on the RAILWAY : How soon can we have it?

2008 -  We understand that the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) are minded to investigate the merit of reopening RAIL LINES to large towns at present with no rail-link to the national network. HAVERHILL, with over 22,000 people should be one of these towns !
